Why our role is so important

Firstly, a gentle nudge to anyone who hasn’t yet signed up for a library card. Not only can you borrow 15 books at a time but Rhiwbina Library offers: 4 public computers, free WiFi, printing and photocopying, newspapers, online services, talking books and room hire, not forgetting the Saturday morning Jigsaw Library and monthly ‘Quiz and a Cuppa’ run by the Friends of Rhiwbina Library.

Check the notice board in the foyer to see what’s going on. Rhiwbina Library is a priceless asset to our community. Use it or lose it!

Children’s Book Bank

We have installed a children’s book bank in Rhiwbina Library. We are collecting new or nearly-new children’s books to donate to those not lucky enough to have books of their own. We have links with Cardiff Food Banks (Ely and Cathays), Trinity Centre (Roath), Barnardo’s (Riverside) and Ty Cwtch, Pentyrch.

The Big Friendly Read

Once again, Rhiwbina Library will be involved with the National Summer Reading Challenge which encourages children to read six books during the summer holiday.
This year’s challenge has a Roald Dahl theme – ‘The Big Friendly Read’. Last year around 600 children signed up for the challenge. Let’s make sure we top that this year.
We’ll be helping library staff promote it with events and prizes to encourage young readers to complete the challenge. There will be a ‘Family Quiz’ – questions based on Roald Dahl’s books (Library, Tuesday 16th August at 2.30pm).
We’ll be outside Rhiwbina Library on Festival Saturday (2nd July) recruiting young readers and joining in the fun. Do come along with your suggestions for future ‘Friends’ events. We’re particularly keen to find things which would appeal to older children and teenagers … so rappers, graphic novelists etc. please step forward.

Looking ahead

Come along and meet best-selling crime writers Edward Marston and Judith Cutler who will be talking about Murder – Ancient and Modern on the 13th September at 2pm. This is a joint event with Awen, the charity supporting Whitchurch Library. All money raised will go to improving our facilities.
