I remember the Lifeboys all sixes and sevens
and very long sermons by W.G. Evans,
the games on The Common, the Boys Brigade teams,
and being a Teddy Boy – just in my dreams!
And then, after Chapel, come snow or come rain,
a kiss and canoodle with Jane, down the lane.

I remember the galas, the cross-country runs
and peeling potatoes at Camp, by the tons,
and God forbid, prayer meetings, Thursdays at eight,
the girls of the Girls Brigade, prim and sedate,
and then, after Chapel, to keep a bloke sane,
a kiss and canoodle with Jane, down the lane.

I remember the trips to the Royal Albert Hall
and – despite Billy Graham – not heeding the call,
the passion and pain of the City Hall dances,
in love with Myfanwy, who spurned my advances,
and then after Chapel, Myfanwy’s friend Jane
gave me kisses and cuddles again down the lane.

I remember the Watchnight with bright stars aloft,
and pew hard and icy but you warm and soft,
and W.G. Evans’ sermons, good grief –
even me showing signs of a little belief!
And then, after Chapel, an awkward young swain
came of age in that dreary old beautiful lane.
