Rubicon, launched in 1976, is the community dance development organisation for Cardiff and Newport and was one of the first of its kind in the UK.
We are a registered charity and this year we are celebrating our 40th anniversary. We provide dance for people of all ages and abilities in a variety of community settings. You will find us in nurseries, schools, care homes, hospitals and all sorts of community venues. Our aim is to provide consistent access to high quality dance activities within a policy of equal opportunity and open access. Out of approximately 150 weekly sessions working with upwards of 2000 people each week, we currently have 10 sessions for 60 + some of which are for elderly participants within care homes, some of whom have dementia to extremely active community drop in community sessions as means to improve their energy, fitness and wellbeing.
The dance sessions are a great way to maintain mobility, flexibility and strength and develop cardiovascular stamina and have fun, which are all vital in maintaining a healthy active lifestyle.
‘Dancing makes me come alive, if I am feeling low when I arrive, I always feel happier when the class finishes. It makes my day and lifts my spirit. Also keeps me fit and supple so improves my wellbeing and as far as I am concerned it is a win win situation. I would recommend everyone to give it a go!!!’ ( Jilda Evans Llanrumney 60+)
After a successful taster session initiated by Julie Morgan we are now running new regular weekly sessions for adults aged 60+ every Monday at Whitchurch Community Centre ( Old Church Road) from 1.30-2.30pm at a cost of £3.50 per session. It is a fun, social session that includes both chair based and standing exercise and dance routines.
‘I was delighted to help set up this Movement to Music session for over 60’s in Whitchurch and it is wonderful that we have the expertise of Rubicon Dance staff to run the session. It is good for your health and great fun too, so I encourage all those over 60 to give it a try.’ Julie Morgan
