Rugby raffle raises thousands for charity

In 2018 Rhiwbina RFC and Cancer Research Wales undertook a joint annual raffle, which was drawn at Rhiwbina Recreation Club just before Christmas. It was the culmination of months of ticket selling by all sections of Rhiwbina RFC and by Cancer Research Wales, with all prizes kindly donated by local North Cardiff businesses. This was a first for both organisations and raised the magnificent total sum of £8,305.
A large crowd gathered at Rhiwbina Recreation Club on Sunday 27th January to see former Squirrel Sam Warburton hand over a cheque for £4,152.50 to Anna-Marie Jones, Community Fundraiser for Cancer Research Wales. There were members of all ages present to hear Rhiwbina RFC Raffle organiser Dave Hobbs explain how this year the club wanted to combine with a local-based charity to raise funds for their work and to support community rugby for all ages in Rhiwbina. Dave said:
“From the rugby club’s perspective it has been great to see players of all ages, parents, members and supporters working hard to sell tickets over a period of four months to reach this excellent total, and we’re especially grateful to all those businesses and individuals who so generously donated prizes.”
Anna-Marie Jones also thanked Sam for attending the event and all those who got involved with the raffle, from the local business that donated the prizes and the players, coaches, members, parents and supporters who sold and bought the many thousands of tickets. Anna-Marie explained that all funds raised will be spent in the Universities and Hospitals throughout Wales and in pursuit of a cure. Cancer Research Wales is making vital progress into the prevention, early diagnosis and better treatments to benefit people with cancer.
Rhiwbina Squirrels were also celebrating qualification for the quarterfinals of the Glamorgan County Silver Ball competition, having won all 10 of their qualifying games. Rhiwbina will play Ystalyfera, current leaders of Division One West Central, at a neutral venue on a date to be decided.
