Exclusive textile artwork to be auctioned for Velindre Hospital

A first year Cardiff Met Textiles student has created a piece to raise funds for the Lord Mayor’s chosen charity, Velindre Cancer Centre.

Jenny Evans, who is originally from Plymouth, knows first-hand the impact cancer can have upon families and will launch her online auction to help raise funds for the Cardiff centre, which conducts research and treats patients with the disease.

Her father Julian suffered with cancer for five years and his garden became a spot he particularly enjoyed before passing away in 2011.

He had been digging vegetable beds there when he felt a pain in his abdomen and was rushed to hospital before his diagnosis.

Jenny, 21, finds being outdoors comforting and ‘The Quiet Garden’ was inspired by the connection both she and her dad had to their garden.

The original artwork, which was created with a mixture of techniques including appliqué and free motion embroidery, was predominantly made from recycled materials, including charity shop clothing and fabric swatch books, reflecting Jenny’s passion for preserving the environment.

One hundred limited edition giclée prints of ‘The Quiet Garden’ will also be available alongside the original.

One hundred per cent of the winning bid for the original ‘The Quiet Garden’ artwork will be donated to Velindre as well as 30 per cent of each print sale.

Jenny said:

“Velindre Cancer Centre is just around the corner from Cardiff Met and this piece was inspired by my dad. He loved being outside in the garden and I know he would have loved this image. ArtFrame Solution – Picture Framers have framed ‘The Quiet Garden’ in a bespoke frame completely free of charge for such a worthy cause.”

Jenny’s auction has been supported by the UMAX programme, which is a free service provided by the University’s Students’ Union, and focuses on employability, careers and volunteering.

Jenny said: “Alison and the rest of the UMAX team have helped me so much. They have always been a ray of sunshine, full of support, compliments and encouragement. They have done everything they can to help spread the word about the auction and I couldn’t thank them enough for all their help!”
