Upgraded play area in Gabalfa officially re-opened

College Road play area in Gabalfa has officially re-opened to the public following refurbishment, giving local families a much-improved place to play right on their doorstep.

Developed after consultation with pupils at Ysgol Gymraeg Glan Ceubal and Gabalfa Primary School, the upgrade was designed to make the most of the existing embankment features on the site, with hill slides and new play mounds built into the landscape alongside climbing features and a three-bay swing set. The children’s input helped shape a space that reflects what young people in the area actually want from their local park.

Accessibility has been a key part of the design. The revamped play area includes a wheelchair-accessible roundabout and basket swing, together with an accessible play puzzle, noughts and crosses, and a light-up challenge feature, ensuring children of all abilities can play side by side. Brand-new safety surfacing has been laid throughout.

Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism, Cllr Jennifer Burke, said:

“We’re investing in upgrades to play areas across Cardiff because we know that access to good quality, safe, imaginative places to play is really important for children.

“When those places to play are free and on your doorstep, they can also have a huge impact on families, particularly at a time when many are struggling with the cost of living.”
