Departures
Long limbs in the lengthening shadows
Late dawn, early dusk, in the shortening days
An indefinable change in the air
Crisper, fresher, a coolness in the breeze
Whisking away the crushing humidity,
Hints of the smoky scents to come.
Summer is wrapping away its gaudy explosion
Of heat and colour.
Bumble bees bounce on the last of the lavender
Squirrels leap from branch to branch
Gathering acorns adorning the paths
Mothlike sycamore seeds spin in the air.
Hedgerows full of tight green berries
A hint of red in the ripening fruit
The rowan tree a blaze of orange
A feast for the crowds of starlings
Jostling at the table.
The green of the lower leaves
Imperceptibly fades to yellow,
Orange and red following
In the final parade of colour.
As it prepares to depart
Summer leaves perfectly beautiful days
In its wake.
Nature’s journey continues.

Softly, Softly Comes a Rustle
Softly, softly comes a rustle to the trees
Whereon are colours of so new to fade
To touch the air and flutter in a breeze
As does it of a growing chill to aid,
Slowly, slowly, comes a wider wind to flow
Across the fields and towards the cottage eaves
Its pace gaining in its strength to grow
As does it carry with it the first of many leaves,
Gently, gently, comes a sparkling coat of white
To rest upon all it has the breath to meet
To hunger for the day through out its path of night
As does it of a mark in an onward march to greet,
Softly, softly, gently does autumn’s way begin
And then to lose and winter strong does in time to win.

Amber Kisses
Leaves drift through cool air
amber whispers kiss the ground
summer sighs goodbye.

2025
They say it’s been our hottest year
But now the autumn’s really here
We reminisce, that since the Spring
Thicker layers we could just fling.
No pouring rain to make us frown
The shorts came out, our legs turned brown.
Okay, some nights were just too sizzling
When we longed for a little drizzling
Overall, we embraced the sun,
BBQ’d, had lots of fun.
Foreign climates not required
Our own homes, quenching desires
For laying, soaking up the rays
Oh how we loved those long hot days.
Holiday clothes were worn each day
Not just two weeks and put away
Factor 50, supplies were sought
After sun, we also bought.
Alas, the season have to change
Our daily routine we rearrange.
Days draw in, switch on the lights
Curtains drawn for long, cold nights.
So wrap up and don’t get down;
Smile, remember not to frown.
2025 was quite a time
The weather really just sublime.
So if you enjoyed the sunshine fix,
Look forward, here comes 2026.
