New Welsh Sports Hall of Fame inductee

Former Whitchurch High School student David Phelps has been inducted into the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame, recognising a career spanning more than two decades at the top of elite rifle shooting.

Phelps, who first took up the sport as a teenager in Cardiff, won gold in the 50m rifle prone at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, along with a bronze in the pairs event. He repeated his individual success at Gold Coast 2018, making him a two-time Commonwealth champion.

Since retiring from international competition in 2018, Phelps has become Rifle Coach for the Welsh Shooting Performance Pathway and in 2025 led the NSRA Roberts Team to their first victory over the USA in 16 years. He also serves on the Commonwealth Games Wales Athlete Commission. He has launched Double Gold Coaching, offering online, one-to-one and group coaching to shooters of all ages and abilities across the UK.

“It’s a true honour and a true privilege,” he said. “I hope my addition can show to young shooting athletes, there is a path to success and lifelong sporting fulfilment.”
