Travelling can take a toll on your back, but with a few simple adjustments, you can stay pain-free. The Whitchurch Clinic’s Andrea Howell shares expert tips to protect your spine on the go.
Packing Smart
Choose a lightweight, wheeled suitcase; hard cases add unnecessary weight. Distribute belongings between two smaller bags instead of one heavy one. At the airport, push your luggage (rather than pulling) to avoid twisting your spine, and use a trolley with smooth-rolling wheels.
On the Road
Adjust your car seat so your knees are slightly bent and your back is fully supported. Keep the steering wheel at a comfortable distance to prevent shoulder strain. Take breaks every two hours to stretch, and do seated exercises (like buttock clenches and shoulder rolls) in traffic. Avoid tight clothing and high heels, which restrict movement.
In the Air
Stay hydrated and skip alcohol to reduce muscle stiffness. Move regularly too; perform ankle circles, shoulder shrugs, and walk the aisle when possible. Use a lumbar roll or pillow for support, and request extra legroom if needed. After landing, walk instead of using travelators to reawaken stiff joints.
At Your Destination
If your hotel bed is too firm, soften it with a folded blanket. Avoid arching your neck while sunbathing – prop reading material at eye level instead. If you intend using a gym, get a proper equipment induction to prevent injury.
Extra Comfort Tips
Apply heat (for muscle stiffness) or ice (for acute pain) as needed. Carry medication in an accessible clear bag and inform flight attendants. Book flights during off-peak times for more space to stretch.
Bear these tips in mind so you can explore the world without the ache. Oh – and safe travels!
