Cardiff’s ambition to transform its public transport system is gathering momentum, with the first phase of the Cardiff Crossrail project set for completion by 2028 – perfectly timed to welcome visitors as the city hosts matches for the UEFA European Football Championship.

This milestone represents a significant step forward for Cardiff Crossrail, which aims to deliver a modern tram network linking Plasdwr, in the city’s north-west, with the proposed new Parkway rail station in the east.

Supported by £100 million in joint funding from the Welsh Government and the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund, the initial phase of the project will commence with a new tram connection between Cardiff Central and Cardiff Bay. Once completed, this link will serve as a key transport route for visitors travelling to and from Cardiff’s planned 15,000-seat indoor arena, as well as connecting workers, residents and tourists between the Bay and the city centre.

Councillor Dan De’Ath, Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning, Transport and Climate Change, said:

“This is a long-term investment in Cardiff’s public transport infrastructure – not just about moving people, but about changing how they move. While the cost of this phase reflects the scale of the undertaking, part of the funding will be used to enhance public spaces and integrate walking and cycling routes. It’s about creating a greener, more sustainable transport system, similar to those already running in cities like Manchester, Nottingham and Edinburgh.”
